A $20-a-month AI tool sounds cheap — until you ask what it actually gives back. This calculator turns the hours a tool saves you into money, then compares that with what the tool costs. Enter the three numbers and the answer updates instantly. The default figures are examples only — replace them with your own.

⚠️ Prices change often — check the official provider pricing page before budgeting. This calculator covers the subscription cost only; it does not include taxes, discounts, or setup time.

Time to break even

✅ This tool pays for itself in under a day — the time it saves is worth far more than its monthly cost.

How the maths works

There are 52 weeks in a year, so one month holds 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks. Monthly time value = hours saved per week × 4.33 × your hourly value. Subtract the tool's monthly cost and you get the monthly saving; multiply by 12 for the yearly saving. Payback is the tool's monthly cost divided by the value of one day of saved time (hours saved per week × hourly value ÷ 7). If the monthly saving is zero or negative, the tool never pays for itself at your rate — the calculator says so plainly instead of hiding it.

Worked example 1: Perplexity Pro at $17 a month (real price)

Perplexity Pro costs $17 per month billed annually — the price shown on Perplexity's official pricing page on 7 November 2026. Say it saves you 4 hours a week and your time is worth $40 an hour: monthly time value = 4 × 4.33 × $40 = $693. Monthly saving = $693 − $17 = $676. Yearly saving = $8,116. Payback = $17 ÷ ($160 ÷ 7) = under a day. For anyone who researches daily, the subscription is a rounding error next to the time it returns.

Worked example 2: a $99-a-month tool (labelled example)

These are example numbers, not a real product price: a $99-a-month AI agent that saves 3 hours a week for someone whose time is worth $60 an hour. Monthly time value = 3 × 4.33 × $60 = $780. Monthly saving = $780 − $99 = $681. Yearly saving = $8,172. Payback = $99 ÷ ($180 ÷ 7) = about 4 days. Even a near-$100 tool pays for itself in the first week when it genuinely saves a few hours — the question is always whether those hours are real, not whether the price looks big.

What the calculator does not count

It does not count the time you spend prompting, checking, or fixing the tool's output — subtract that from your hours saved first. It does not count learning time, integration time, or the cost of a tool your team never actually uses. And it does not count quality: a tool that saves five hours but produces work you have to redo has saved you nothing. Frequently asked questions

How does the AI ROI calculator work?

It turns hours saved into money. Monthly time value equals hours saved per week times 52 divided by 12 (weeks per month) times your hourly value. Monthly saving is that value minus the tool's monthly cost, yearly saving is the monthly figure times 12, and payback is the monthly cost divided by the value of one day of saved time.

What hourly value should I enter?

Use what an hour of your time is actually worth: your salary divided by working hours, your freelance rate, or what you would pay someone else to do the same task. For a business, use the loaded cost of the employee whose hours the tool saves, not just their take-home pay.

What counts as hours saved?

Only time the tool genuinely removes from your week — drafting, researching, editing, or admin you no longer do by hand. Do not count time you spend prompting, checking, or fixing the tool's output; subtract that first, and be honest about it, or the result flatters the tool.

What if the tool does not pay for itself?

Then the numbers are telling you something useful: either the tool saves too few hours at your rate, or it is too expensive for the job. Try a cheaper plan, a free tier from our free AI tools list, or a different tool for the same task — and re-run the calculator with the new price.

Are the example prices on this page real?

The Perplexity Pro example uses the real price shown on Perplexity's official pricing page on 7 November 2026 ($17 per month billed annually). The $99-per-month example is a clearly labelled illustration, not a real product price. Prices change often, so always check the official site before buying.
