Starting today, October 9, 2026, anyone using Gemini on a free personal Google account is limited to a single model: Gemini Flash-Lite. The Flash and Pro options disappear from the free tier's model picker entirely, according to Google's updated support page on model access and limits — first reported by 9to5Google on October 3 and widely covered this week.

Paid users aren't fully spared either. Subscribers to Google AI Plus ($4.99/month) will keep Flash-Lite and Flash but lose access to the Pro model — Google says AI Plus users will get an individual email specifying when the change takes effect for their account. Only the higher-tier AI Pro ($19.99/month) and AI Ultra plans keep the full lineup, including the "Deep Think" advanced reasoning option.

Flash-Lite is Google's smallest model, designed for quick everyday requests like summaries and brainstorming, while Flash balances speed and reasoning and Pro handles demanding work like complex math, coding and analysis. The same update adds low, medium and high "effort" settings that let a model spend more resources on a task — at the cost of burning through usage limits faster.

The move draws the clearest line yet between Google's free and paid AI: with Gemini 4 Argon reserved for Ultra-tier access when it goes general, the strongest Gemini models are now firmly a paid feature. Anyone relying on free Gemini for coding help, long-document analysis or multi-step reasoning will feel a real capability drop — not just a rate-limit tweak.
