Anthropic unveiled Claude Duet on October 21, 2026, a proactive AI agent aimed at professionals and small-business owners. It is a research preview built on Claude Opus 5.5, available through a waitlist for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US (Team and Enterprise come later). The pitch: instead of waiting to be prompted, Duet comes to you — morning briefs, background task-running, and a tap on the shoulder only when something needs your attention.

The architecture is what makes it different from a chatbot: Duet runs on its own cloud virtual machine with its own browser, so it keeps working when your phone or laptop is switched off. Each morning it sends a short brief on the most important items across your connected apps; during the day it checks those apps every few hours and messages only when something needs attention. It plugs into 6,000+ connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace — Gmail, Slack, Stripe, Shopify, QuickBooks, DocuSign, LinkedIn, HubSpot and more — and can handle tasks like scheduling meetings, building dashboards, drafting invoices, or building web apps. Sensitive actions are gated: Duet asks for approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting items, and trading securities or moving money between accounts is prohibited outright.

Anthropic is upfront about the caveats: as a research preview, Duet may misread a message thread or misjudge what's urgent, and it is less effective at personal errands like booking tickets. There is also a real cost to always-on monitoring — background checks count toward your existing plan's usage limits, so a busy Duet eats into the same allowance as your chat windows. The launch lands amid a flurry of proactive-agent releases, with OpenAI's Dots arriving last month and Meta's Muse app climbing the US App Store charts — the race is now about who gets to run your day.
